COMMENDATION

23 July 1943

From: Commander in Chief, United States Atlantic Fleet.
To   : Commander Patrol Squadron EIGHTY-THREE.

Subject: Commendation.

          1.        The Commander in Chief, United States Atlantic Fleet, notes with much pleasure and gratification the report of the action of U.S. Navy Patrol Planes FIVE and TWELVE of Patrol Squadron EIGHTY-THREE with an enemy submarine on 15 April 1943.  In a combined action these two planes repeatedly maneuvered into position and successfully attacked the enemy submarine with depth charges and machine gun fire in the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire.  The concerted attacks of the two patrol planes caused the submarine to lose headway, settle by the stern and finally to sink, stern first, leaving many survivors in the water.

          2.        Successful air operations such as that described can only be achieved by the thorough training and indoctrination of the personnel of the squadron concerned.

          3.  The Commander in Chief, United States Atlantic Fleet, commends Patrol Squadron EIGHTY-THREE for this splendid performance.
