This award certificate was kindly made available by Tom DeTemple whose father-in-law, then enlisted Aircraft Pilot John M. Cleary, manned the bow turret during the attack on U-156.  He later became a Hellcat pilot on the Wasp and flew in many campaigns in the pacific.  He received a gold star in lieu of a second Air Medal for downing a Zero.
