Ships Hit
None
Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

This KTB uses the depth notation "depth T = xx meters"  Under this scheme, the actual depth was twice the depth given after T = so for example, if the KTB entry read "depth T = 50 meters, the actual depth was 100 meters.  This was intended to hide the actual depth for security purposes. This notation was used from about January 1940 to December 1941.  In these KTBs, depths written without using "T =", for example "dived to depth 35 meters" were not so disguised.

WNW 5-7, Sea 4, high Swell
Convoy is 340 nm northwest of us.  The boat still has 55 cbm fuel.  Because we must operate on a northerly course, the return transit would be about 1800 nm.  About 40 cbm is necessary for that.  If the boat operates with a NW-course, it can reach the convoy a day earlier, it must run at 2 x GF and fuel will not suffice. On meeting the convoy the boat would still have about 3-5 cbm to hunt, if convoy steers to the NE or east.  If necessary, return transit would have to be to Bergen. But since boat desperately needs major shipyard assistance, I want to return to Lorient, if possible.
Assuming that convoy will steer more easterly over time, operated on it at HF and course 330°.  Due to the Sea State the instead of 12 knots the boat makes only 7/5 knots over the ground.

Boat was continually heavy, so that there was no more water to pump from the regulating tanks, plus the starboard regulating tank leaks and must be carried full.
It turns out that the starboard negative buoyancy tank makes water.  It was blown, by which the boat was 4 tons lighter.  With further attempts, no more water gets through.  If it runs full again the next day, wash and drinking water will be pumped and the negative buoyancy tank will be carried full.

Since 11.25 hours tried unsuccessfully, to send the Naval Short Signal.
In the mean time the bearing changed to 40°T, it is unclear if the aircraft was over the convoy at bearing 30°T or 40°T.

13.10   Radio Message 1217 hours that our Naval Short Signal was unclear.
13.20   Radio Message 1213 hours from B.d.U.:  Convoy from B-Dienst and air reports at 10.15 hours in AM 4593, course 250°.
Between our plotted convoy position and this is a difference of 50-120 nm.  Therefore Short Signal corrected and Radio Message 1151 hours sent:  Bearing in 30-40°.  Position AL 9573, SE 5, Vis. good, 22 cbm.
No longer operated on the convoy, because with wind SE 5, with 22 cbm the boat  has just enough to get home.
If boat ran with only one E-motor KF to wait on the convoy, we would have to wait 2 days back and forth in position and on sighting the convoy begin return transit.  Additionally the boat should not transmit, then the area here is only "stirred up".  If the boat hads off now the radio will not bother anyone because there are no U-boats nearby.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote.

===================================

The boat remained without success due to missing traffic.
While operating and in attack on the convoy in the period 9 -12 September it was not possible for the Kommandanten to select the most favorable opportunities due to the very low fuel inventory.
The attack on 12 September with set torpedo depth of 2 meters was too low for the heavily loaded targets.  If the surface runners are also considered torpedo failures, they might have been hits with depths set higher.
The decisions and considerations made by the commander during the operation were proper and correct.
