       A.)
        Experience report. |
        |

      |   |

The fuel oil and lubricating oil transfer was completed in the same manor
as on the 4th war patrol.  In contrast to recent oiling provisions,
light oiling gear was used without stiffening steel cord. In my opinion,
this steel cord is another complication of the gear.  As this war
patrol showed, this steel cord is superfluous.  Weather conditions
were always unfavorable, for the most part moderate to large seas prevailed.
The hose tore once, however, this was due to the awkward maneuvering
of the boat to be supplied. |
        |

      |   |

To improve this simplified light oiling gear it is merely suggested
that a short clad section of hose be inserted so that the underlying
mat on the supplied boat, which is always slipping, can be omitted.
The eye for the tripping line must be fastened on this section of hose.
         |
        |

      |   |

Supply was always with the sea or swell with smallest possible power setting
of the E-motors.  This resulted in no driving difficulties, except
the one case in which the hose tore. |
        |

      |   |

Provisions delivery was executed partly with the rubber boat, partly by
means of line and canister. |
        |

      |   |

The boat could still work well in high swells with the rubber boat, however,
it was occasionally made more difficult or questionable by awkward seamanship
of the boat to be supplied. Also the careless treatment, on the boats
to be supplied, of the canisters is to be mentioned.  Some went overboard
due to carelessness, some were hit so hard against the side of the hull
that after supplying half of the boats we had no waterproof canisters
        left. |
