Note: The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website. The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank. |

10.04.40 | Apparently he made a leg athwart the seas. Because the boat was proceeding to weather with one diesel LF. Suspicious, because now he has only a foresail set (he has three masts).
Closed submerged to 200 meters. Remarkably good rigging, brightly painted nationality marking on the side of the hull (Danish). Marking "Falen Danmark". Passed out of sight quickly. Not detectable in the listening gear, if he carried engines. Soon thereafter from the direction that the sailing vessel passed out of sight in 70°T, an aircraft (single-engined), that arched above the water and then turned towards us.

18.05 | Surfaced. | ||||
Immediately after surfacing 2 aircraft in sight astern to starboard, that passed out of sight in a southerly direction and shortly thereafter approached out of the sun.
18.10 - 20.28 | Dived. After about 5 minutes a light bomb detonated at great range. The boat vibrated lightly, no damage.

04.00 | AN 3440 | ||||
NNW 4, 2/10, Sea 3, high Swell, Vis. good
05.00 | Course 124° | ||||
05.18 | Large English U-boat came in sight. When it suddenly 2 masts came in sight and a dark small hull was initially taken as a far off vessel at a sharp target angle. Morning twilight was well advanced (was prepared for morning celestial observation). I stood before the dark westerly horizon, the vessel was to the bright southeast.
While closing was recognized as a U-boat conning tower by the high periscope shears. The boat must have surfaced just before the sighting, against the seas (from the N), the over deck was still overspilled and only stood out momentarily when the seas happened.
At 7-800 meters range tube III (G 7a ) was ready to shoot. Getting closer was impossible in the lightness.

11.04.40 | |||||
05.28 | I shot a G 7a with depth 4 meters on course 48°, lead angle for target angle 90° bow left, enemy speed 2 knots. The torpedo ran well, the bubble track ran at the enemy boat. At the shot the enemy turned away very quickly to starboard and apparently picked up a lot of speed.
Miss! | |||||
Boat type: conning tower "UNDINE" without cannon, estimated size 700-1000 tons, straight forecastle.
05.30 | Crash dive. I wanted to try and shoot submerged, if the enemy was zigzagging. However, he also dived immediately. I went down to depth 70 meters, because tube II was hurriedly made ready and was flooded from outboard. I wanted to shoot a G 7e instead of the more visible G 7a if possible. In the listening gear the enemy U-boat was heard only briefly (E-motors and compressed air sounds, probably pumping with compressed air), strong self noise (pumping with the auxiliary drain pump) precluded listening speed.
Moved off. | |||||
07.23 | Surfaced. Radio Signal sent: Enemy U-boat located square 3446. U-5
Then moved off to the south on the surface with a zigzag course. My intention is to give the U-boat the impression that I am running away. Hopefully he will surface, continue on and I will get contact again.
08.47 | Dived, to ran to the shooting location at higher speed, no sounds. Torpedo reloaded submerged and back and forth in position at periscope depth. Intend, to systematically search the square for the U-boat.

22.50 | Vessel, apparently a Vorpostenboot in sight ahead to port. Called with Recognition Signal at 1000 meters, initially by signal lamp, then often by searchlight, no answer. Passed, not identified as a Vorpostenboot. Call was with AA. Suspicious, came about, approached slowly to port at 12 nm, called several more times with searchlight: "German warship stop." Steamer maneuvered apparently a few 10s of degrees to both sides and changed speed settings.
After repeated requests to stop encourage with MG C / 30. Shot 4 bursts of fire to the left and right of the steamer, over and short. Steamer stopped and turned towards. Thereafter with a small searchlight call from him with Recognition Signal letters, give before by me. Gave "X" and afterwards Recognition Signal call. When nothing follows, Recognition Signal call alone. Thereupon followed proper Recognition Signal and Morse call-sign exchange. It was the Vorpostenboot "VUG". Mutual position lanterns set briefly.
