Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

Forced to submerge several times by aircraft, therefore continued transit submerged. Continuous airborne reconnaissance day and night.  Aircraft remain a long time over the diving location.  Strong Asdic sounds were heard whose bearing did not change.  Propeller sounds were not heard.  Here it is  believed the aircraft must use noise buoys which are thrown and send out these sounds for 15 minutes.  In 2 hours 1-3 of this type of buoy were repeatedly thrown, bearings were taken on these perfectly and their direction did not change.  No escorts were detected.

    00.06 AK 7989 Radio Message:  "Convoy square AK 8721, 230°, 11 knots."
      WNW 2, Sea 2, 9/10, 1021 mb, Vis. good
00.30 Reached intercept point on the convoy line of advance, running on course 40° opposite to convoy course.  Because convoy was not yet sighted by 20.00 hours, continued searching on courses 250° and 200°, because bearing marks received lay between 340° and 270° and the convoy is on a southwesterly course.  Convoy has probably run past to the west of us.
01.00   Radio Message:  "Convoy square AK 8716, 230°."
02.05 Continued search on course 180°, because the convoy is running on a southerly course.
02.10   Radio Message:  "Convoy square AK 8741, 10 knots, 220°."
03.40 By bearings from the contact keeper the position of the convoy is in a westerly direction.  Came to course 205° to continue searching.
04.25 BD 1254 Convoy in sight bearing 270°.  Hold contact on 2 destroyers.
04.46   Radio Message:  "Hold contact on convoy square BD 1254."
    05.00 BD 1257 Convoy bears 310°, distance 4000-8000 meters.
Destroyers turn towards.  Am forced off.  Cloud cover breaks up, so that I am positioned in the bright moonlight.  Maneuvering ahead to get out of moonlit sector.  You can see 2 destroyers ahead, there were 2 on the port side and 2 astern to port.  Close screen.  Approximately 8 to 10 big steamers.  Visibility quickly becomes bad.  Contact broken.  To regain contact attempt to maneuver ahead towards 270°.  Run into a destroyer bearing 270°, target angle 0°, high speed.  Own U-boat bearing 0°, 6000 to 8000 meters distant.
08.28 BD 1514 Crash dive for destroyer bearing 270°.
Sound prosecution, 6 hours of depth charges.  No failures.  Locating.  Sudden appearance of the destroyers allows us to assume radar-detection.  Depth charges are sometimes well placed, but above the boat.  In 6 hours 104 depth charges.  Boat takes on a lot of water at deep depths and can be held only with HF.  Must repeatedly pump out by all means without taking into consideration the sounds made during the depth charge series.  In the upper deck a loud rattle.  Because of the other boat which also dived and the strong self-noise no Bolde were used.  The destroyers ran off.

18.10   Convoy in sight bearing 40°T.  Several smoke clouds.
Forced off by destroyer.  Destroyer had a southeast course, thereby supposed an easterly steering convoy.  During pursuit on 90° and 0° courses a westerly course is determined.  Speed by plotting 12 knots.  Am positioned behind the convoy heading for Kingston (Jamaica).  Aiming for a night attack in EC 1410, possibly under water, because of the bright moonlight.  Because of the high speed day attack is not possible.  Convoy consists of 5-8 big steamers, among them a four-masted sailing ship.  Convoy must be gone around because of shoals to the north.

On surfacing the distance to the convoy has become approximately 28-30 nm.  After careful consideration approaching for attack is hopeless.  By then the convoy will be positioned too closely off Kingston. Operation broken off.  Gyro compass failed 2 times during the operation.

21.45   Vessel sighted bearing 90°, course 45°, 5 knots by plotting.
Vessel had set masthead light that shone to the side, but not in the direction of traffic; as well as at the stern a half light (like an illuminated wheel-house).  Vessel was avoided, because it was suspicious (believed to be a U-boat trap).

Commentary of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

on the Kriegstagebuch "U 511" from 08.12.41 - 29.09.42.

First war patrol of the Kommandanten with a new boat, given the duration the success is meager.  Behavior at the convoys was not yet skillful enough.  The boat was detected too often on 31 July by the screen and so the attack was thwarted.  On 20 July it was wrong to give up, based only on the assumption that the convoy was going to Kingston.  Hold on tenaciously until there is clear evidence.  On 28 August it would probably have been possible after the attack to run off on the surface and to maneuver ahead again.  The information about the success of this attack is a pure conjecture and cannot be evaluated completely.  Recognized are:

                                       1 steamer of 8000 GRT
                                       1 tanker of 9000 GRT
