		18.00		Am ahead of the steamer, still waited one hour because the moon is too bright and to better grasp the zigzag scheme.  He zigzags about 35 from general course to each side, and actually all 5 minutes, but from time to time throws in zigzags, where he steadies for 10 minutes, while on the general course he usually only runs for 3 minutes.  A few times he also zigzags back on the course he just left.  A timetable is not determined for these zigzags, one hour is too short for that.
		19.17		To Action Stations.  Positioned myself so that I can pick him up on course 280°.  He zigzagged during the attack to 315°, I set off to port and just wanted to start again when he zigzagged back to 280°.  He now had target angle 0°.  Set out energetically to his starboard side and ran in with as much speed as possible, in order to knock him off on this course in any case.

		17. - 22.07.43		Worked on the boat, renewed the paint, engine repairs, partial clearing and offload of no longer necessary outfitting to the base, which urgently needs them.
		23.07.43		Since so far no answer to our question concerning torpedo delivery at the base was received with Kpt.z.S. Okuda of the Japanese O.K.M. agreed to hand over all torpedoes here except for 1 Eto and 1 Ato, which are to be taken along for teaching purposes.

		01.00 - 03.00		Trim test in the harbor.  Boat has a strong oil trace from Fuel bunker 7, should actually go to the dry-dock.  However refrained, because in Penang there was no dry-dock possibility and because the boat will proceed in convoy to Sohnan.  Until then fuel bunker 7 will be empty, so that there are no longer any disadvantages for the onward journey.

Okuda from the U-boat Department in the Japanese Naval Administration and 4 Japanese Officers, that are to take over the boat after the handover, came aboard for their own instruction and navigational assistance.  As an interpreters, from the German side Ingenieur Apel and Mtr.Gefr, Rudolf were taken along.
				Kpt.z.S. Okuda brought specified route for further transit to Kure, on this route the boat was announced to all Japanese warships. If necessary, Recognition Signals were to be made by the Japanese Officers.

		09.12		In the mist mastheads and smokestacks of 2 steamers in sight in 45°T.  On getting closer recognized a 3rd steamer and a patrol vessel, high speed, course about 210°.  Ships continually change their formation and each ship zigzags independently.  One of the 5 ships, a tanker, has angled out to the side and is supposed to be the starboard escort.  He zigzags incessantly at increased speed.  The patrol vessels is positioned on the port side of the convoy.
		09.35	MX 7355	The boat has closed to about 3000 meters.  I had the Japanese Officer brought on the bridge to exchange Recognition Signals.  Now it turns out there was no special Recognition Signal given for us here, also the Japanese Armed Forces do not use Recognition Signals. The boat was to be announced, that was sufficient.
				The tanker turns towards and opens fire on us with his bow cannon.  I immediately showed a large Japanese flag.  The tanker still fired 2 more shots and then turned away.  Impacts lay 300 meters behind the boat.  Now the patrol vessel closer at AK.  Our Japanese Officer Morses and uses signal flags with him.  However, he is very suspicious and wants to send a boat over to check the information.
		10.15		One Officer of the patrol vessel comes on board.  It turned out that the convoy had no idea of our presence.  Kapt.z.S. Okuda gave him a Radio Message for the Japanese Navy and asked me to report this incident to the Naval Attaché in Tokyo as well, so that the German side can request notification again.  He's embarrassed about this and apologizes for his Navy's failure.
				The convoy is a troop transport by the ships "ASAMA MARU", "AWATA MARU", 1 ship of type "YAWATA MARU", the tanker "OMUROSAN MARU" and a large freighter whose name could not be determined.  The patrol vessel was the coastal defense boat "ETOROFU", a new type, about 1000-ton size.  Appearance:  high forecastle with clipper bow, flush deck up to the stern, round bridge, raked stocky smokestack, between the bridge and smokestack a small searchlight stand, after edge of the bridge a long pole mast, on the cabin deck a short stump mast.  Armament: 3 cannon, probably 12 cm, 1 forward, 2 aft, to both sides of the bridge 2 heavy machine guns, on the bridge a radar.

				Conformation of receipt was not given by the Naval Attaché.  According to the Kirschblüte [Cherry Blossom] Radio Message it is not necessary, but it would have been more welcome for us in this important case, especially since we had bad experiences with Choshi Radio yesterday.

		07.25		Fuka Sima Lighthouse abeam.  Was taken under escort by the coastal patrol vessel and continued in convoy.  It happens at just the right time because my gyro-compass fails temporarily.  Proceeded through the Bungo Strait on the prescribed route.  It runs just under the west side of the strait, the center and east side are mined by statements of the Japanese Officers.

		09.15		Mine layer "NAWAJIMA" takes us under escort again.  Had not found the enemy U-boat.
		11.00		Passed Sada Misaki Lighthouse.  During the transit through the Bungo Strait the following coastal fortifications and batteries were found:  Sen Saki, Tsurini Saki [Tsurumi Saki], Sada Misaki
				Proceeded through the Inland Sea.  Apparently a training area for the Japanese Fleet.  The battleships "MUSO" [FUSŌ?] and "NAGATO" are maneuvering there.  A modern heavy cruiser does target shooting.  Appearance:  clipper bow, flat flush deck, cruiser stern, box bridge with radar antenna, behind it, thin tripod mast, a raked smokestack, 2 catapults, the second somewhat lower, aft tripod mast, somewhat shorter than the forward mast.  Forward 2 gun turrets, aft one.

		14.00	OP 9874	Anchored on the Argenosho Roadstead off Yashiro Sima, 28 meters water depth, 80 meters chain.  Boat remained there until 6 August at 22.00 hours, to paint the exterior.
				In the Roadstead lay units:  U-boat support ship "ZINGEI", further a former pleasure vessel, which now serves as an accommodation vessel for U-boat students, 4 U-boats of type 53-57, which serve as school boats and have the new designation I 153 etc.  Further I 40, a newly constructed boat which lay here for its own training.  Appearance:  high box silhouette, bridge also box shaped, covered at the front, periscopes protrude slightly over the bridge fairing, aft 1 gun, probably 14 cm.  Size by estimation and comparison with other boats about 2600 tons.  It is said to be the same type as the I 17, which is not further described in "Weyer".
