  January 1942.  UAK trials in Kiel.  Diesels gave trouble.  Frozen in until about April 1942.  Trials in Baltic June 1942.  Final overhaul in Stettin (Oderwerke) July 1942.  Silent running tests at Rönne.  
     
  First Patrol:        Left Kiel beginning of August 1942 on operational patrol lasting about 11 weeks operating off Newfoundland.  Claimed four steamers sunk.  Took over oil during latter part of patrol from a damaged 500-ton U-boat.  Arrived Lorient in October 1942.  
     
  Second Patrol:        Left Lorient in November 1942.  In vicinity of Azores impure Diesel oil caused trouble with diesels and U-513 returned to Lorient about 22 December, 1942 without having fired a torpedo.  
     
  Third patrol:        Left Lorient about early February 1943.  Operated vicinity of Canary Islands, off the African coast.  About early March 1943 were attacked by an airplane, possibly a Halifax, which dropped three bombs.  Lights went out and a gyro repeated was put out of commission; otherwise little damage.  They saw many steamers, but claimed not to have sunk anything.  Returned a few days before Easter 1943  (25 April).  
     
  Fourth and Last Patrol:        Left probably 18 May from Lorient.  Were supplied with about 30 cubic meters oil mid-June from 1600 ton supply U-boat.  All six air torpedoes were brought down from upper deck containers.  Operations area south of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  
     
  Sinking:        Saw attacking airplane and the commander gave the order to fire both with the 3.7 mm anti-aircraft gun as well as with the 20 mm cannon.  The 20 mm cannon jammed after just a few rounds.  Of the four sticks
