With Sea State from 7 neither economical cruising speed (diesel electric) LF or even HF increased to 2 x HF can be maintained because the diesels stop due to high external water pressure (wave peaks) on the exhaust gas piping, water enters and remains there. In heavy weather the boat can be held obliquely to the sea only on one shaft with E-motor 2 x HF to GF, nearly without any speed of advance. The other shaft pure charging. The battery charges only very slowly because in addition to the consumption of one E-motor at 2 x HF or GF there is continuous operation of the main drain pump (water through the conning tower hatch and diesel air intake shaft). Additionally compressed air charging is only possible with the E-compressor. To have any speed of advance it is necessary to dive and proceed submerged. |
The cause of this problem is thought to be the new camshaft, the larger overlap periods of exhaust and intake valves in forward gear must bring about a decrease in the exhaust gas pressure. |

Detections may be from aircraft, or "Blimps" that are monitoring the expanded area off the coast. No sound bearings. Detections from land stations are also conceivable because the coast rises to 100 meters. Will remained submerged until dawn, then determine if the same air reconnaissance is to be expected by day. |

The frequent detections show relatively the same surveillance of the coastal area by day as by night. Sound bearings were not heard. I now suspect detection from strong land stations rather than from aircraft. Am over 30 nm from the coast. How far I am really detected by this locating I cannot determine. Henceforth I will remain mainly submerged and only surface to charge the battery and/or ventilate the boat. |

Crash dive! Went to depth A, then to depth A -40 meters. An attack by multiple aircraft can be expected shortly, therefore remained submerged until darkness. |
The aircraft attack took place without previous detection. Wanze and Alderney were manned, Naxos out of service at the moment. I conclude that I could have been flown at either with a Naxos detection, which the Alderney did not pick up, or my presence in the coastal area had already been betrayed. The sea area is stirred up for me. Moved off on search courses to the NE, to later come to a southerly course to go around the Newfoundland Bank. Will move back and forth in position in BC 81 for a few days, give Radio Message then advance to BB 5940. Traffic from the mainland to Newfoundland is to be expected. |

Positioned in long legs with general direction north-south. Refurbished Wanze, Naxos. Listened to Radio Messages given for some days concerning the disposition of the U-boat groups "Körmer" and "Jahn" to the east and northeast which were not applicable to me. Therefore I wait until Radio Messages given by these groups takes place. I anticipate the opportunity to participate in operations on a westbound convoy detected by these groups. |

Flying boat initiates attack after tight spiral in a steep dive. Shot with 2 cm anti-aircraft weapons, aircraft returned fire with on board weapons. Altitude at bomb release 25 meters. Turns at the falling of the bombs (4 at once) away to starboard with hard rudder. Bombs went over the boat at the level of the bow, entered the water on the port side and detonate shortly after one another with delay. At the same moment as the bombs the aircraft threw a smoke marker. Aircraft flies far off. Minor failures. When the flying boat approached, had nothing more to throw, |
