LTJG John M. Elliott USNR was the co-pilot of LTJG Auslander's PBY.  While LTJG Auslander flew the approach from the left seat, LTJG Elliott was responsible for releasing the 4 depth bombs from the right seat.  The bombs bracketed the surfaced boat, resulting in its immediate sinking.  For their actions that day both pilots were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.  Air medals were awarded to the Navigator LTJG McMackin, and Crewmen AMM2C Denauw, ARM2C Watson, ARM2C Garren, AMM3C Smith, and AOM3C Mustone.
