Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

I cannot carry out these operational orders  due to too great distance, will go to Group "Schill III".

As planned, a second patrol line will be set up one day's run to the north of the first.

  17 Nov IV) a) 2) U 709 - 969 - 343 - 586 - 648 - 238 - 618 - 86 will form Group "Schill 2" and be in patrol line from CF 1338 to CF 2238 at 1800/19/11.
U 426 will also join this group and have freedom of action according to her fuel stocks.
As U 608 cannot reach her position with Group "Schill 1" in time, she will join Group "Schill 2" and extend the patrol line by one position to the west.

18 Nov IV) a) 2) After the first aircraft report had been received a new patrol line was ordered for Group "Schill 3" (U 608 - 709 - 969 - 343 - 586 - 648 - 238 - 618 - 86) further east.  As U 515 gave the convoy's position much further north than expected, the line was moved 60 miles to the north in the evening and was thus from BE 7934 to BE 8825 at 1800/19/11.

Immediately opened fire with quad 20 mm and with both twin 20 mm.  Despite well-placed impacts 4-engined aircraft flies stubbornly on and fires with heavy on board weapons close over the conning tower.  No bombs.
After overflying the aircraft turned a wide circle to starboard.  Interior illuminated by fire and flies inbound once again from astern.  Again well-placed fire from quad 20 mm.  Aircraft falls into the sea 1000 metere behind the boat, burns for about 5 minutes, then is no longer seen.
In accordance with Standing Order No. 29:
First Naxos detection, growing louder.  Then searchlight from port abeam range about 800 meters, altitude 70 meters, approach at low altitude.  Boat condition before attack:  Both diesels HF with charging, Main Receiver, "Wanze II" and "Naxos" switched on.
