Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

Observation:  Apparently the tanker is now aground about 1000 meters west of the Rif Fort floating on the bottom, lies with port list slightly down by the bow.  Bow and stern are now folded down again.  Apparent enemy speed was the current.  Not worth further shots.  I only wonder, why the torpedo did not go high order, if not at the target, at the coast or on the bottom.  Circle runner?  Came to starboard, turned away came within about 600 meters of the Rif-Fort

21.43   At periscope depth.  Tanker not distinguished in a wall of smoke.
A small vessel comes from land bearing 323°T.  Type cannot be made out due to sharp target angle.  Believe for the purpose of rescue action.  Not worthwhile because it is too small.  Went to depth A -40 meters.
21.45   2 depth charges far off.
21.50   2 depth charges astern, far off.
    22.00   1 depth charge a bit closer.
23.06   Dull detonation astern.  Since 21.54 hours (by sound bearings) patrol vessel zigzags and changes speed settings.  Stops from time to time.  Went to depth A +0 meters.
23.43   Sound bearings of 2 fast runners in 220° and 180°T soon overrun us.  One patrol vessel from port ahead to starboard astern.  Propeller sounds heard clearly in the boat.
23.47   2 depth charges, well placed but too high.  Probably pure luck.  Quite a lot of glass damage, electric drive of the aft diving planes failed, strong banging sounds in the over deck.  Did not have the impression that we were detected by locating.  Temporarily to depth A +40 meters.
23.55   Courses and depth charge throwing without any system.  Both patrol vessels run off in astern bearing.  Thereupon went to periscope depth at silent running.

Very bright moonlit night.  Will wait, until the moon disappears behind a large cloud bank.
10.08   Another large shadow bearing 210°T.  Target angle left 10-20°, course 40-50°.  Range about 6000 meters.
10.25   Shadow passes out of sight bearing 170°T.
11.14   Turned towards the tanker to attack.
11.18   Shot from tube I and III.
Range about 900 meters, depth 3 meters, tanker type "MAGERA" fills UZO optics nearly completely.  Speed 10 knots.  Target angle left 80°.  The Ato, which initially inspired confidence heading for the tanker was a surface  and circle runner.  Turned away to the left.  Noticed while turning away, that the tanker reduced speed.  Took astern, now lies stopped.
11.21   Shot from tube VI.  Range 1000 meters.  Speed 0 knots.  Target angle left 100°, depth 3 meters.  After the shot the enemy remained stopped.  Ato ran normally.  Unexplained miss.  After two minutes the tanker got underway.
Maneuvered ahead again.  Intend to attack submerged at dawn.

12.40   Turned for a stern shot.
12.42   Shot from tube VI.  Ato, range about 3000 meters.  Target angle left 110°, depth 3 meters, enemy speed 11 knots.  Miss, possibly due to inexact shooting data.
No artillery use due to weather.  Tanker seems unarmed.
I can no longer undertake a pursuit by day in a westerly direction due to fuel inventory and Sea State.  Believe that more will come here because strong traffic was already observed by ourselves and U-502 in this area.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote

on the Kriegstagebuch "U 67" from 27.12.41 - 30.3.42.

The success of this patrol is slim in relation to the duration and traffic encountered.  This is due in part to the many unexplained misses.

The attempt to conduct an artillery attack on the oil refineries on Curacao should have been tackled more energetically.
