Ships Attacked
None
Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

06.18   Slender high smokestack comes out alongside the masthead, target angle about bow right 3°, range 8 nm.  Dived for submerged attack.  Target is a patrol boat of about 600 tons proceding independently, appearance and size like the German fishing trawler type: single high mast, strongly canted with wider radio yard, thin high smokestack, light blue-gray and light gray extensive camouflage painting.  Armament similar to German patrol boat or U-boat hunter.
At range = 3000 meters switched attack sides to run in from the east with the sea.  Enemy steers 210°.  Speed by plotting and listening 8-9 knots, 106 RPM.
07.14   At range = 500-600 meters three-fan, tubes I, II, IV settings:  torpedo speed 30 knots, depth 2 meters, target speed 9 knots, bow left 73°, shooting angle 5°.  Miss.  After 6 minutes 32 seconds an end of run detonation.  Apparently the enemy, which at this moment I could observe easily from target angle 135°, range 3500 meters, did not notice.  Because he drives so carelessly through the area I intend a repeated single shot
08.30 AT 6195 Surfaced at range 8 nm from the enemy, held contact and maneuvered ahead.
12.06 AT 6456 Ahead of the enemy target angle 0° dived for submerged attack.  By matching the he still runs at 8 knots steers 210°.

50 meters ahead of the boat it broaches, but goes back in.  After about 20 seconds the enemy turns away hard.  At the same moment I saw the torpedo break through the surface and barely pass by the bow due to the avoidance maneuver.
13.04   One depth charge.  Thrown to the wrong side.
13.05   One depth charge.  Also on the wrong side.  Thereafter the enemy turns towards, went to depth A -60 meters, ran off a bit at GF.

13.30   Positioned north of the eastern tip of Nansen.  On the rock group 400 meters from the eastern house, there stands a new beacon about 14 meter high, four legged lattice pyramid out of metal.  Close thereby 2 radio masts.  West therefrom, at the foot of the 30 meter knoll stand 6 houses which are still under construction.  From the north only the roofs are seen.  In front of the north slope 4 cannons are positioned, similar to German 8.8 or 10.5 cm antiaircraft guns.  One gun is drilled, approximately 30 men are engaged in the building of building low walls around the cannon.
14.00   300 meters before the battery.  They are very long-barreled cannons, sea targets or anti-aircraft cannons.  I intend to go around the eastern tip of Nansen Island into the Palander Strait.
14.30   Positioned in the Palander Strait, 400 meters off Nansen Island.  From here after approaching further the camp is easily distinguished.  There are a total of 8 newly constructed different large buildings, 3 of which are apparently 2 story with rectangular annexes.  Construction is underway on all buildings.  2 small huts seem to serve as ammunition sheds.  On this side there are two anti-aircraft machine guns.  The whole thing seems to have been unloaded 14 days ago.  The bay east of the northeast corner of Nansen Island is suitable as a ship anchorage.  An sounding was not possible with the lack of the Echolot.  However I did not run aground 150 meters from land.

07.30   While running at AK to index the starboard diesel failed.
    09.40   Made fast Harstad.
11.40   Cast off Harstad to continue transit to Narvik.
17.00   Ran into Narvik, delayed by the failure of the starboard diesel and momentary failure of the port diesel.
17.05   Beyond the net barrier off Ankenes approached with E-motors LF.  The helmsman misunderstood the order of the Watch Officer while steering through the entrance gap in the net barrier and took the wrong buoy ahead.  Before counter measures could be taken ran onto it.
17.20   While attempting to heel the boat by running the crew back and forth on the over deck and backing down at AK Masch.Gfr. Schiefelbein fell overboard.  Despite stopping the motors immediately, he drifted close to the hull ahead.  Three times he did not seize lines thrown between his arms, surprisingly he suddenly went under.  Presumably cardiac death.  Masch.Mt. Müller immediately jumped after him however could no longer find him.  The ensuing search with a patrol boat and dragging was broken off after 3 hours.
    23.25   Made fast alongside "STELLA".

During the ten-week patrol at every position the crew always performed crisply and was ready for action.  The engine, radio and torpedo personnel always fixed disorders caused by the length of the patrol in a short time and with skillful use of limited resources.  The seamanship part of the crew carried out the artillery operations with enthusiasm.
The health of the crew was always good.
The sending of radio messages was difficult due to the bad sending and receiving possibilities, often only possible at night.  Reception was always on VLF.  It seems the Russians cannot take bearings on the bad short wave.  The air surveillance encountered had taken nothing from the English experience.  In the area of the sea routes coastline and depth indications agree, outside the chart notations are inaccurate. So the running aground of the boat several times was inevitable after failure of the Echolot even with careful driving.  The main traffic from the east seems to shut down from the end of September.
