                                                                              Passing the Strait of Gibraltar.
     
 
1.) All boats that have passed the Strait of Gibraltar from west to east report unanimously that the task can be carried out without particular difficulty with respect to surveillance and defenses.  From the information at hand surveillance of the Strait is done by destroyers, corvettes and small vessels.  The number of warships involved in surveillance is low.
         Air surveillance is to be expected not only in the area of the Strait but additionally reconnaissance and monitoring to the west and east.
          Each time an operations starts from Gibraltar (departure of convoys from Gibraltar to the east or west) a increased activity of the patrols is determined.

12.11.41 Gibraltar, Mediterranean
01.50   Tarife abeam.
02.55   Gibraltar abeam.
    In the Strait of Gibraltar there was no definite surveillance was determined.  A lot of small fishing vessel, some of which were partially dimmed interfered greatly.  Fished with nets with light buoys which were deployed on two rows.
    At Gibraltar a small dimmed vessel was sighted.  Destroyers or trawlers were not deployed as patrols.  Passed several steamers on opposite course.

06.50   Larache
    Lighthouse in sight.
    2 steamers in sight.  Carry lights and have nationality markings illuminated.  Went in the vicinity of the left steamer.  Spanish course 230.
08.45 CG 2897 Dived.
    At depth 65 meters put the boat on the bottom, so as to have a full battery passing through the Strait.
20.00 CG 9851 Surfaced.  The sea is nearly calm.  Wind 2.  The moon is still in the sky.  Slowly ran towards Cape Spartel, to be off the Strait at moonset.
24.00   Cape Spartel abeam.  Ran into the Strait.
