Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

06.41 BF 6898 Aircraft (4-engined bomber) bearing 180°T.   Flies towards the convoy from the broadside.  The immediate onset of anti-aircraft fire prevents a targeted bombing.
Bombs fall in the water about 300 meters abeam "U-Nollau".
Altitude of the aircraft 800-1000 meters.
After throwing bombs the aircraft turns away and disappears in the haze.
06.56 Le Verdon Roadstead Aircraft (4-engined bomber) bearing 200°T.  800 - 1000 meters altitude.  Sits outside range of 3.7 cm anti-aircraft gun and flies towards the convoy from astern.
By well lying anti-aircraft fire the aircraft is forced to fly a serpentine course.  Bombs fall accordingly about 500 meters behind the stern of the boat in the water.
After throwing bombs the aircraft turns away.  While so doing a smoking motor is observed.
        Aircraft passes out of sight.
07.20   Aircraft (4-engined bomber) bearing 200°T.  Flies towards the convoy, however turned away after the first shots by the 3.7 cm.

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote
                         on the K.T.B. of "U 857"  (Premauer) from 9.5. - 13.8.1944.

          1.  Mission of the Kommandantur boat was to give important weather reports.  There were no opportunities for success.  With the detection on 5 June, it was incorrect to take the Fliege from the bridge to get a clear field of fire.  In addition to detecting locating, the "Fliege" is also used to indicate the direction that the locating comes from. Thus, the boat can always be placed such that aft all anti-aircraft weapons can be used. When observing on 22 July it was very likely an aircraft searchlight. Behavior was correct during the aircraft approach on 22  July at 15.43 hours. Otherwise nothing to note.
