				Initiated attack.  Unfortunately there are fog banks again.  The listening gear is working again, proceeded by this.  At about 800 meters the steamer suddenly comes with target angle 60°.  Turned to attack course with a forceful maneuver.
		10.15		Multiple shot from tubes I and III.  Target angle 70° and 80°, speed 13 knots, range 800 meters (by running time 580 meters), depth 3 meters.
				After 33 seconds hit bridge.  Impact of the second torpedo was heard clearly in the listening gear, no detonation.  The steamer.  The steamer lies stopped athwart the seas however does not want to sink yet.
		10.22		Shot from tube V with enemy speed 0 knots.  Immediately after the shot the steamer got under way and turned to port.
				Miss.
				However it was only his last heartbeat.  Now he sinks slowly.
		10.45		Surfaced!  I estimate the steamer at least 10000 GRT.  Photographed it to be sure.  I cannot stop at the people due to the bad visibility because the destroyers must still be in the vicinity.

		11.07		Surfaced.  Above I see without binoculars the boat directly ahead at target angle 0°.  So a mess!  With a normal periscope one had to have seen.  Distance is at most 3 nm.  Now he has also seen me!
		11.10		Crash dive!  New attack initiated, however the boat neither comes in sight in the periscope again nor can still be heard.  Naturally it is submerged.  Attack was broken off after half an hour.

				Remarks on the Patrol.
				===============
				The attack on the convoy was significantly impaired by the thick fog, several hours alternating visibility between 200 and 500 meters, and by the continual large fog banks with visibility otherwise 10-20 nm.
				Especially the fog banks make planned contact keeping and fast maneuver ahead impossible.  Surprise surface attack on the escorts was prevented by the short visibility distance (between 300 and 1000 meters), because one only saw a shadow at most 5-10 seconds and then is was completely high out.  Keeping up and maintaining contact was not possible.  Although I always the tubes ready, I always had to turn away at "AK", one time a destroyer ran through my wake.
				I gained the impression as if the escort were new and inexperienced; I encountered destroyers at short range four times without being detected or hunted a single time.  The forcing off by destroyers was not carried out energetically, one gained contact again after a short time.  I never had to dive before a forcing off destroyer.

				I highlight the very good functioning of the bridge watch as lookouts.  Thereby it was possible, despite the fog to stay in the immediate vicinity of the convoy and always stay ahead.
