The Wartime Album of Heinz-Walter Schulz
This album is presented thanks to Henrik Behrens and Katrin Nielsen (granddaughter of Heinz-Walter Schulz). |
Heinz-Walter Schulz graduated from the German Naval Academy in 1939. He was a member of Crew 36 (intake of officer cadets in 1936 - the "Olympia" crew). Initially, only 32 of Crew 36's 324 graduates joined the U-boat arm. By the end of the war, 164 had become U-boat Commanders, many of them famous. After completing training as a U-boat Engineering Officer he served aboard U-123 for 5 patrols. The first as prospective Chief Engineer under Karl-Heinz Moehle, then 4 patrols as Chief Engineer under Reinhard Hardegen from April 1941 to May 1942. He then served as Chief Engineer of the newly commissioned U-849 under Heinz-Otto Schultze from March 1943 until the boat was lost with all hands on its first patrol on 25 November 1943. This album covers the period of Officer training and U-boat training from 1936 to 1941 and two patrols in U-123 from April 1941 to 23 August 1941.
