Ships Attacked
None
Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

01.05   Lookout reports mastheads bearing 90°T.  Ran off at AK.  Recognized as a fast independent zig zagging heavily.  Although I run off at highest speed and course 230°, the steamer comes on, however the sun is already setting so I can remain on the surface. The enemy steers around course 270°.
01.30   Distance quickly grows larger, enemy momentarily passes out of sight.  Again turned towards.  Enemy now steers about 180° (evening zigzag?).  Continued to hold contact, in so doing recognized that it is a 3 smokestack passenger vessel.  Unfortunately I quickly fall astern.  Enemy runs at 19-20 knots.
02.20   Last sighting.  Am positioned to starboard astern of the enemy.

03.02   Surfaced.  From plotting the enemy runs 140°, 12-15 knots.  I am now so far behind that it seems to me a pursuit during the night is not appropriate, especially in view of the mine task.  From Radio Messages "Hornkohl" is ahead of me.  The nearly simultaneous execution of our task at the new moon time seems most important factor for success. Pursuit of the steamer takes us away from the objective.  I decide to terminate the pursuit.

I took no navigation fix today before diving due to weather conditions.
