Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

U-504 was a member of Group Group Eisbär.  The Group was ordered to conduct a surprise attack in the roadstead and then operate in the Cape Town area.  The Eisbär Operations Order is found in the last pages of the BdU KTB for 1-15 August 1942 (pages 96-104).  There is also a note from the Naval Staff on the first page of the KTB (page 64).  Click the BdU icon to see the BdU KTB.

After 92 and 97 seconds hit forward 30 meters, aft 30 meters.  The steamer stops, however shows no effect, lies just a bit down by the bow.  It is a 5000 GRT freighter, clipper bow with small jib boom, 2 masts cut off at the trees, in the center a thin radio mast, oil fired, cruiser stern, 5 hatches, relatively thin smokestack.  It is very heavily armed, forward and aft one 8.8 - 10.5 cm cannon, astern elevated about a 3.7 cm in the center 2 fighting platforms with 2 cm, in each bridge wing a MG, the bridge armored with sand bags.  The steamer does not settle.
06.23   Shot from tube III, target angle = 80°, target speed = 3 knots, range = 800 meters, aim point center! - miss.
Probably under-ran in the very high Swell.
06.28   The steamer lies unchanged.  4 lifeboats are set out.  Therefore once more coup de grâce.  From 400 meters from tube IV, hit center!
Now the steamer settles immediately over the forestem.  As it settles about 12 men jump overboard, some directly from the cannon.
06.31   Surfaced.  Closed a tightly packed lifeboat, name of the steamer - EMPIRE JAGUAR" 5186 GRT.  The people in the boat are all white, young people, in uniform.  There exists in connection with the strong armament the suspicion that it is an auxiliary warship.  At the sinking location float many plywood boxes that by the floating condition must be empty.

20.11 ENE 6, Sea 5, 7/10 Again ready, came to course 270° 16 knots.  It is a normal freighter with oil fueling.  In nearly bright as day moonlight maneuvered ahead for submerged attack at about 7 nm distance with enemy course 280°.
    22.30   Dived for attack.
23.12 KZ 1972 Shot from tube V + VI, target speed 10 knots, target angle 80°, range = 800 meters, depth = 3 meters.  Aim point forward 30 meters, aft 20 meters.  After 44 seconds a hit center, the second torpedo probably passed ahead.  The about 5000 GRT sized freighter stopped, because apparently the boiler exploded.  Otherwise no effect.  Again heavily armed!  Boats were lowered.  On deck illumination was by flashlight.
23.38   Coup de grâce from tube II, with a torpedo that according to previous findings was not running properly.  Range = 400 meters, depth = 3 meters, the torpedo broached three times and hit forward 20 meters, apparently just under the water surface.
23.40   Surfaced.  The steamer is settling on an even keel, otherwise nothing noticed, except for a slight list to port.  Ran to the lifeboats lying 1500 meters aft of the steamer.  Questioning yields: "CITY OF JOHANNESBURG" 5669 GRT for Capetown with wool, jute and tea.  The stated "from Melbourne" seems questionable from the type of cargo.  It was affirmed that the Radio was not used, the first hit was directly under the radio room

Visibility is changing greatly so that the ship is difficult to make out.  It seems to be a large steamer with 3 masts.  Came to course 230°, 16.5 knots.  Maneuvered ahead on enemy course 220°.  The target angle is initially 50-60°.

17.34 KZ 1864 Dived with enemy target angle 0° for submerged attack.  From the maneuver ahead the enemy runs a minimum of 14 knots.  Depth control is especially difficult today because the steep confused Swell wants to heave the boat out.
17.53   The enemy comes in sight in the periscope , target angle 0°.
18.02   The enemy turns to starboard and now lies bow left, target angle 40°.  I suspect a course change to East London.  Range is not about 8000-9000 meters.  Came to course 310°, 7 knots to possibly reach shooting position.

18.38 KZ 1864 Shot from tubes V and VI, target speed = 14 knots, target angle = 80°, depth = 4 meters, range = 800 meters.  Immediately after the shot the enemy turned hard to starboard about 60°, therefore miss.  Turned hard towards for a bow shot.
18.43   Four fan from tubes I - IV.
        Target speed = 14 knots, target angle = 90°, spread angle = 3°, range = 1200 meters, length estimated 120 meters, depth = 4 meters.
Two hits after 73 seconds, and the center actually observed, the second must have been 40 meters aft.  Heavy detonation, apparently an oil bunker flew in the air.  The ship slows to a stop and remains lying a bit down by the stern with a slight list to starboard.  It is a large passenger freighter, outward curved bow, 3 masts, of which 2 forward of the bridge, the forward-most especially heavy tackle.  In the center 2 passenger decks, on that a thick smokestack.  Cruiser stern.  The length of the ship is at least 165-170 meters because the ship in the fixed periscope at 400 meter range and small magnification fills nearly the entire eyepiece.
19.07   One heavy detonation, apparently bulkheads in the steamer are broken or a boiler burst.  Reloaded the last Eto for a coup de grâce.
19.28   The ship still lies exactly as before.  Therefore at 400 meters coup de grâce from tube III.  Hit after 30 seconds.
19.33   Surfaced.  It is the end of twilight.  The steamer is conservatively assessed at 12000 GRT, lies with a list of 30°.
19.35   To the west first one then three individual searchlights in sight, beams make fingers at the shooting location.  The bearing of the base points of the searchlights changes strongly, therefore they are thought to be patrol vessels running here.
Came to course 60° at 15 knots to run off, the steamer can no longer be salvaged!
19.40   Over the position where the steamer is located there is suddenly a dark smoke cloud seen, while he [the steamer] has disappeared.
19.45   Came to course 120°.  The searchlights are considerably closer and search wildly in the area.
19.51   Searchlights are extinguished.  I intend to move off to download, there are no torpedoes below deck at the moment.

Successfully completed fourth patrol of the Kommandanten.
The operation in the waters off Cape Town, with the sudden appearance and the heavy, lightly protected traffic there, would have lead to greater success if Kommandant had used his torpedoes somewhat sparingly.
There is no doubt that easy chances of success passed unused because of premature torpedo consumption!
                Otherwise nothing of note!
